Risk communication with communities is about providing clear, transparent information and creating two-way dialogue that supports people in reducing risk. When hazards, potential impacts, and planned actions are explained in accessible language and feedback from the community is invited and acted upon, trust is built and people are better prepared to take appropriate protective steps. This participatory approach leads to more effective risk reduction because communities understand what to do, can voice concerns or local knowledge, and participate in planning and response.

Sharing information only with staff misses the essential community input and undermines the two-way exchange that's needed for effective risk management. Limiting information to reduce concern can backfire by fostering misinformation and mistrust. Avoiding conversations about risks leaves people unprepared and unlikely to respond appropriately when hazards occur.
